What is Constipation

Constipation is condition when regular movement of bowel is impeded or blocked. Number of bowel movements differ from person to person as every individual is unique but in a healthy person it usually ranges between three times a day to three times a week. When regular movement of bowel is changed and the rate of movement decreases we call that condition Constipation.

Constipation is also define as condition in which feces become hard and it is difficult to excrete. Bristol Stool Chart is used to describe characteristics of feces. Bristol Stool Chart classify feces form into seven different groups.

Feces in Bristol Stool Chart are often classified by the amount of water they contain and their shape with Type 1 containing the least amount of water and for that reason they are very solid and hard to excrete while Type 7 contains the most amount of water and often with no solid pieces. Type 7 is commonly a symptom of Cholera.

Type 1 and Type 2 feces are the one which are usually associated with constipation and are often the cause of constipation. Type two feces are lumpy while Type 1 feces are excreted in separate hard lumps and it is very difficult for a person to pass such Type 1 and Type 2 feces. These feces are very hard and solid and contains the least amount of water or moisture. Type 1 and Type 2 feces also contain very less fiber content. Type 1 and Type 2 feces are much harder to excrete due to lack of moisture and their shape.

Constipation is a very common gastrointestinal complaint. Constipation accounts for lot of physician visits in the world however it can easily be prevented. Generally speaking Constipation is caused by poor diet that lacks in fluids or fibers.

Constipation if not treated may even lead to pain and the symptom regularly associated with the bowel movement and blocking or changes in those movements. In its severe form fecal impaction might occur in which it is extremely difficult or almost impossible to pass feces and in such case it becomes necessary to remove such fecal mass manually with help of surgical instruments which can be a rather painful method so it is very important for a constipation patient to take this disorder seriously and seek proper treatment for this condition. One can avoid and prevent Constipation from happening by keeping ones fluid and fiber intake at healthy level and eating fruits and vegetables that are fiber rich and also contains lot of fluids. Regular exercise can also help a lot to prevent Constipation.
